We’re about two weeks away from celebrating Independence Day! While you may be anticipating BBQs, pool parties, fireworks, and some quality family time; there are many people who will not be spending the holiday with their loved ones. This month we challenged you to write letters to a deployed troop, veteran, new recruit, or first responder in honor of their dedication to protecting us. If you haven’t had a chance to sit down and write those letters, it’s okay! There is still plenty of time to gather your supplies and ship your letters to Operation Gratitude. Head on over to our June Campaign to see how you can get started and complete this month’s Campaign.
If you’re looking for more ways to give back in honor of Independence Day, we’ve gathered a few, simple ideas!
Host a BBQ
Gather your friends and family for a BBQ! Spending quality time with the people you love and care about most is important. Better yet, host a BBQ with a purpose and ask everyone you invite to bring a canned good or personal care items, such as a toothbrush or travel size shampoo bottle. Collect the donated items and take them to your local veterans association! If you really want to get in the spirit of the holiday, invite some local service men and women as well as veterans!
Say Thanks to Your Local Service Men and Women
While you’re gazing up at the sky in awe of the amazing fireworks, there are police officers and firefighters nearby making sure everyone stays safe. As you see them be sure to say thank you or hand them a written thank you note!
Volunteer
Animal shelters are always looking for dog walkers to take those pups out on the town and get some fresh air! Most dogs do not like the sound of fireworks going off, so give them a nice walk and tire them out before (what can be) a stressful evening for them.
Keep Our Public Parks Clean
Going for a hike or hosting a picnic at your favorite park? Be sure to pick up your trash and keep these places beautiful for everyone to use!
Participate in a Local Charity Event
Many cities celebrate Independence Day with fun sports tournaments and races. A lot of the time, the entry fee goes toward a local charity. So get out there and join in on the fun! You can also help out by prepping or cleaning up after your city’s Independence Day parade!
