With cold weather sweeping most of the nation, our focus for February couldn’t be more perfect! Imagine braving the cold weather without the proper clothing…brrrr! We feel giving the homeless some winter gear is the perfect way to share kindness and some warmth this month!
If you’ve stood outside in the cold for even a short amount of time without proper attire, you know the effects it can have on your body. Your fingers and toes start to freeze, then burn and tingle with pain. Your whole body shivers, your ears and nose start to turn hard and red, and if in the cold long enough, hypothermia starts to set in. We can’t even imagine living through a whole winter without a home AND proper winter attire!
We may not be able to provide a home for every person on the streets, but we can do our best to provide some warm clothes! Gather your friends, family, peers, and community to come together for a coat drive for the homeless this month! In addition to coats, we encourage you to make homemade scarfs and hats! Last January, a group of our Ambassadors and their families hung scarfs, essentials, and warm notes throughout LA and Orange County. This small act of kindness had such a big impact on the homeless people living in Southern California and we’re so excited to incorporate it into this month’s campaign!
Items Needed for This Month’s Campaign
- 1 Large Cardboard Box
- Markers of Various Colors
- 1 Poster Board
- Package Tape or Glue
- Fleece in Various Patterns
- A Pair of Fabric Scissors
- Painters Tape

How to Do This Month’s Campaign
Using your markers, write on your piece of poster board “Coat Collection for Homeless!” or whatever you would like to write to grab people’s attention! Be sure to include the date you will be picking up your box on your poster. Tape or glue your poster to your large cardboard box. Ask your school, place where you attend an activity, or local community center if you can place your coat collection box in a location where lots of people will see it! On your pick up date, take your box of coats to a local homeless shelter where they can distribute them.
To make fleece scarfs: pick out your fleece from a fabric store and use your fabric scissors to cut the edges of your fleece (with adult help or supervision depending on age). YouTube has some great tutorials for making no-sew fleece scarfs! Please use the internet with adult permission or supervision.
